The Eucalypt Woodlands of the WA Wheatbelt is vital in mitigating degrading processes such as salinity and erosion, while also positively influencing local climate patterns.
The Southwest of WA is an internationally recognised biodiversity hotspot and the only place on earth where the Eucalypt Woodlands of the WA Wheatbelt Threatened Ecological Community (TEC) occurs. An unprecedented extreme weather event over the summer of 2023-2024 appears to have driven large areas of vegetation death, scarring the Southwest of Western Australia landscape.
This project runs until 30 June 2026 and aims to quantify these impacts, identify the extent, and repair impacts in priority locations. This cross-regional project will collaborate with key stakeholders to deliver management actions that support the approved conservation advice whilst strategically targeting the worst impacted areas for on-ground conservation, improving the condition of the WA Wheatbelt Woodlands.
This project received grant funding from the Australian Government Saving Native Species Program.
