NACC NRM’s Fishing Float Survey project has taken off since its launch in May this year, all thanks to our passionate community!
This project aims to reduce fishing related litter by documenting and monitoring debris that washes up along the Northern Agricultural Region’s coastlines. The data collected will help identify the proportions of lost and discarded items from different fisheries. Furthermore, the project will analyze both old and new items to assess the rate of recent losses or disposals. These findings will enhance current ghost gear studies and will be shared broadly as a valuable resource.
So far, 127 float numbers have been recorded as part of this project. Currently, the floats have come from:
- 78% commercial fisheries
- 10% lost recreational gear
- 12% unknown
After two community events in September, NACC NRM’s Coastal & Marine team noted a significant boost in numbers. Data was collected at an annual beach clean up at the start of the month, organised by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) on the Turquoise Coast. Later in the month, multiple partners including Tangaroa Blue, the Yamatji Southern Regional Corporation Ltd Sea Rangers and Central Regional TAFE completed a clean up at the Abrolhos Islands. A big thank you to the coordinators of each clean up for taking the time to submit float numbers.
If you have come across discarded floats on the coastline between Kalbarri and Guilderton and would like to contribute to this citizen science initiative, click here and submit your data! A prize of $100 will be awarded to the person with the most amount of completed submissions across 2024/2025!
Thank you to the Keep Australia Beautiful Council of WA for supporting this project.
