Around 40 Year 4 students from Dongara District High School recently joined teachers and parents to plant up a storm along the Irwin River estuary, planting more than 500 native seedlings to help rehabilitate their local environment.

This project was undertaken in partnership with the Shire of Irwin’s Tidy Towns Sustainable Committee, Dongara District High School, and the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC).
The planting was one of a series that included a community planting day and a business planting event. A total of 1,400 local native seedlings have been planted along the northern bank of the Irwin River Estuary as a result of this series.

The planting was initiated by the Tidy Towns and Sustainable Committee and supported via Round 8 of NACC’s Coastal Community Grants Program. An additional 400 seedlings were also provided as part of NACC’s Elevate Your Impact project. The project also helped initiate partnerships with the local businesses and school.

Irwin Tidy Towns Sustainable Committee chairperson Bronwen Scott said she was thankful for the assistance with getting the plants in the ground. “We could never have completed the planting program without the fantastic support of the local community, businesses and school children,” she said.
