Watheroo Primary School students learnt a thing or two about feral animal management earlier this month when NACC NRM officer Heather Legge popped in to say hello.
NACC has established a partnership with a number of Primary Schools in the region, with teachers and students getting involved in NACC’s Feral Fix: Enviro-Stories project.
Students involved in this project are writing and illustrating 15-page storybooks focused on the feral animals they have researched. Their final products will be published as an A5 school reader.
It was a hands-on visit at Watheroo, with students enjoying trapping an unsuspecting fox puppet inside a cage trap.

The students also had fun deciphering infra-red camera footage of native and feral animals, , as was listening to audio recordings of feral animal calls.
Heather said it was a pleasure to share knowledge about feral and native animals with the Watheroo Primary School students.
“Kids in the #NAR are really switched on when it comes to the environment and they were eager to learn more,” she said. “When I asked for suggestions about unique options for feral animal management, one student suggested developing a special potion that could transform an animal so that it wasn’t feral anymore – now that is creative thinking.”
“I am sure the kids will have some great ideas for their Enviro-Stories picture books that they will be creating very soon.”
