At the end of October, NACC NRM hosted valued delivery partners at the NACC NRM Enterprise Hub to mark the commencement of our new five-year project, ‘House and Home: Safeguarding Native Species’, supported by Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) and Beach Energy.
A moving Welcome to Country set the tone for the day, with David Ronan kindly joining us and sharing his language, culture, and history.
NACC NRM’s Programs and Operations Manager, Kane Watson and Biodiversity Program Coordinator, Jarna Kendle presented the group with an overview of previous conservation efforts and outlined on ground activities that will contribute to the new project’s outcomes.
Centred on the iconic Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo, this project will be delivered over five years and aims at strengthening conservation efforts across the Mid West. Within the Shires of Irwin, Coorow, Carnamah, the City of Greater Geraldton and surrounding areas, the project will prioritise protecting threatened flora, restoring habitat, managing invasive species, and engaging local communities in meaningful on-ground action.
Works carried out under the House and Home project will also focus on First Nations involvement, with opportunities for Aboriginal rangers and local Indigenous businesses at the forefront of efforts like seed collection, monitoring, and pest management.
The launch enabled representatives from MEPAU and Beach Energy to get to know key individuals involved in the project’s delivery. This included NACC NRM’s Biodiversity program team and Sam from Sam’s Midwest Vermin Control, a local First Nations business partnering with NACC NRM to provide on Country pest management services throughout the project.
NACC NRM extends our sincere thanks to all involved in this initiative. Together, we look forward to creating lasting positive outcomes for our region’s unique biodiversity and the communities that care for it.
