‘House and Home: Safeguarding Native Species’ has been a collaborative project between NACC NRM, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), and Mitsui & Beach Energy, making significant strides to protect the critically endangered Koobabbie Eremophila (Eremophila koobabbiensis) within the Northern Agricultural Region.
Thanks to this project all known subpopulations are now safely fenced off, preventing grazing by livestock, kangaroos, and rabbits, giving these precious plants a fighting chance!
DBCA has been actively collecting seeds from Eremophila koobabbiensis and other species in the area to ensure their future preservation. Notable collections include threatened and priority flora such as Acacia aprica and Calandrinia wilsonii, with these seeds now carefully processed and stored for future use.
As part of this project, each subpopulation of Koobabbie Eremophila was meticulously surveyed, with all individual plants recorded and tagged. Excitingly, a new plant was discovered in the northwest fenced area and a new seedling in the western fenced area, bringing the total number of mature plants to four, plus one seedling!
Yamatji Rangers received invaluable seed collection training from DBCA’s research scientist Dr. Andrew Crawford, learning collection techniques for a range of native plant families and building lifelong conservation skills.
In preparation for this project, DBCA laid essential groundwork by recording all locations of living and dead Eremophila koobabbiensis plants and collecting soil samples to extract and store seeds. These seeds were x-rayed to determine their viability. To create an insurance population, DBCA also collected cuttings from healthy plants and transported them to Kings Park Botanic Gardens nursery, where clones were raised and maintained as an ex-situ collection. Currently, there are 27 plants from previous cuttings, with ongoing efforts to increase their numbers.
These comprehensive recovery actions are vital for the preservation of Eremophila koobabbiensis and highlight the incredible impact of collaborative conservation efforts. Together, we’re making a difference!
This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government, NACC NRM, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel, and Mitsui E&P Australia with Beach Energy.
