As part of NACC NRM’s project ‘Improving Subtropical and Temperate Coastal Saltmarsh in the NAR’, our Coastal & Marine team have recently completed the Regional Saltmarsh Management Plan 2025-2035.
This comprehensive plan maps out many of the major mainland occurrences of this Threatened Ecological Community (TEC) in the Northern Agricultural Region (NAR) and provides individual condition and threat assessments for each area. This information in turn enabled a cross-region threat assessment to be completed, which has highlighted priority actions that will maximise conservation of this TEC.
Some priority conservation actions are already underway, particularly weed and access control, with more planned over the next two years. Raising awareness on this little known ecosystem is ongoing, with various complimentary activities and publications already planned or completed.
In fact, completed just recently was a saltmarsh planting event in Green Head. Students from Leeman Primary School, with abundant assistance from the Shire of Coorow and the Green Head Coast Care group, took to the mud and planted local provenance saltmarsh tubestock into Green Head wetlands. The area is heavily impacted by BMX bikes, and getting the local kids involved will help spread the word on protecting this sensitive habitat. Check out the video here.
With the completion of the management plan, targeted conservation actions and community events will make sure that conservation efforts are maximised and saltmarsh can put its best foot forward.
This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust and NACC NRM, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
