Soil is home to more than 25 per cent of our planet’s biodiversity and grows 95 per cent of the world’s food. Yet, much of what lies inside soil is a mystery. One thing is for certain – we must preserve it! Healthy soil is key to sustaining life on our planet and being resilient for the millennia to come.
This World Soil Day, NACC NRM is pleased to announce we are playing a special role in understanding Australia’s unique soil, assisting in CSIRO’s National Soil Monitoring Program!
The National Soil Monitoring Program (NSMP) is a collaborative effort between CSIRO and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. It is Australia’s first nationally coordinated soil monitoring program, aiming to collect and analyse as much data possible from approximately 3000 sites across Australia. The data will help to improve our national understanding of soil health and trends with relation to climate, land use and management practices, and ways Australia can adapt.
NACC NRM’s Sustainable Agriculture team will be working alongside Wheatbelt NRM, engaging landholders in the Northern Agricultural Region with the potential to host sites identified by CSIRO. Around the country, sites were carefully selected by NSMP’s soil monitoring network to represent a broad range of soils, landscapes, climate and land uses, with a focus on the agricultural and food producing regions of the country. Mid way through 2025, the NSMP has commenced in the South-West of Western Australia, marking a major step forward in generating high quality soil data across this region.
Why does this project matter? It’s an important key to progressing Australia’s National Soil Strategy, which sets out how Australia will value, manage and improve our soil for the next 20 years. Although Australia is internationally renowned for our quality agriculture industry, the health of our soil continues to decline in the face of many challenges, including erosion, acidification and salinisation. The NSMP will help to support the measurement, monitoring, mapping, reporting and sharing of soil state and trend information, to inform best practice management, decision making and future investment in soil.
Soil, like air and water, is vital to thriving life on earth. This World Soil Day, NACC NRM is proud to be playing a role in supporting the continual improvement of our country’s soils.
