Aboriginal sustainable harvesting isn’t just about gathering food or materials – it’s about caring for Country so that Country can continue to care for us.
For tens of thousands of years, Aboriginal peoples have used deep knowledge of the land, seasons, and ecosystems to harvest in ways that protect and respect Country. This includes knowing when to harvest, where to harvest, and taking only what’s needed so plants and animals can regenerate.
These practices aren’t just environmental, they’re cultural. Knowledge is passed down through generations, strengthening the connection between people, land, and culture, and making sure resources are looked after for the future.
Today, Aboriginal sustainable harvesting still has so much to teach us. When traditional knowledge is combined with modern science, it can help restore ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and keep cultural knowledge alive.
Caring for Country is about more than looking after the environment, it’s about creating a healthy, sustainable future for everyone.
