Earlier this month the NACC NRM Regional Agricultural Landcare Facilitator (RALF) team along with NACC NRM CEO Katherine Allen, headed down to York for the 2020 Talkin’ Soil Health Conference.
Hosted by Wheatbelt NRM, over 140 participants from across the country attended the York Town Hall for presentations, panel discussions and interactive Q&A opportunities focusing on the latest information supporting optimisation of soil health through farming practices.
Wheatbelt NRM successfully packed the agenda with local and global industry soil experts including the likes of Joel Williams (Integrated Soils), Dr. Rob Sudmeyer (DPIRD), Emeritus Professor Lyn Abbott (UWA), Dr. Michael Crawford (Soils CRC), as well as local Bencubbin farmer Rob Grylls, Buntine farmer Stuart McAlpine and many more.
The conference underlined ideas and recommendations on soil health issues and how Western Australia can address some of the constraints in our farming systems.
Five progressive farmers from around the state were recognised as 2020 Soil Health Champions, which provided them an opportunity to share some of the soil health practices they have been implementing on their properties in recent years.
Watch this space for a profile of our NACC NRM Northern Agricultural Region champion Max Lewis, coming soon.
The Q&A panel sessions provided key information on building carbon, options for dryland ag
soils, case studies with results, as well as key practices and how farmers could realistically implement them within the short-to-medium term.
