Solid Science – Traditional Ecological Knowledge

Traditional ecological knowledge is the knowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have of the land, sea, sky and waterways, and the relationships between them.

For thousands of years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples used their knowledge of the environment to source and produce food in an effective and sustainable way.

This knowledge allowed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to live in environments that were often harsh. Their efficient practices left plenty of time for leisure activities and a rich cultural life.

Today, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continue to use their knowledge of the environment to source and produce food sustainably. Traditional ecological knowledge is increasingly becoming recognised as an effective resource for better understanding nature, and for sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation.
