The twin towns of Dongara and Port Denison are situated along Western Australia’s stunning Coral Coast and are divided by the Irwin River, which creates a scenic landmark as it meanders between.
The Thungara Trails are made up of six walks ranging from 2.7 km up to 9 km and are situated in the Dongara region, with Thungara Trail 3 (the Irwin Heritage River Trail) providing a great way for visitors to explore the Irwin River.
This trail is particularly exciting for the bird watchers with a number of species taking advantage of the river habitat, coastline and surrounding bushland.
The walk is a 4.6 km loop that begins at the Irwin River Lookout on Church Street in Dongara where breathtaking views of Port Denison and the Indian Ocean are on offer.
The trail can take 1-3 hours depending on fitness and includes a spectacular lookout along the way at which point walkers with a keen eye may even spot a dolphin or two.
Denison House can be found along the trail which is now used by local arts and crafts groups but was originally the site of the first flour mill in 1865.
