It may only be a small step for Geraldton, but the inaugural meeting for the first Geraldton-wide Coastcare Group marks one giant leap for local protection of our coast.
Hosted by the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC) the meeting took place last Wednesday at the new Geraldton Multipurpose Centre.
More than 30 community members gathered to express interest in the group that will be formed in partnership with NACC, Coastwest and the City of Greater Geraldton (CGG).
Representatives from Geraldton’s existing local Coastcare groups; Drummonds Cove Progress Association; Friends of Bluff Point; Friends of Point Moore; and Sunset Beach Community Group also attended the meeting.
NACC Coastal and Marine Program Coordinator Mic Payne, highlighted the potential structure of the group and core objectives. as well as. discussing what that would then mean for the members.
The group’s goal is to work with existing community groups and stakeholders to have a Geraldton-wide approach to protecting and managing our coastal and marine environments.
“The formation of the Geraldton Coastcare Group allows for the community to target coastal issues on a larger scale within the Geraldton coastal region and maintain a strong two-way communication with the city,” said Mic.
“NACC will Chair the group for the first year, if elected to, and will continue to provide ongoing support during and there on after,” he said.
NACC Coastal and Marine Project Officer Vanessa McGuiness said “After taking comments from the crowd, many were enthusiastic to see this group move forward which is a very successful outcome.”
