National Agriculture Day 2023

Did you know that agriculture accounts for over a third of the Northern Agricultural Region’s (NAR) economy? With 70% of the land in the NAR dedicated to farming, sustainability of this sector means sustainability of the region.

Friday 17 November 2023 marked National Agriculture Day, a day to learn about the farm sector, which provides Australians with high-quality food and fibre, grown in our backyard! Here are some key facts about Australian Agriculture:

  • The industry has grown at an average rate of 5.3% over the last 50 years.
  • Nationally, an average of 72% of agricultural products are being exported.
  • The largest commodities to agricultural production are Cereal Grain (21%), Cattle (18%), Oil Seeds (6%), and sheep (5%), all key exports of the NAR.
  • The agricultural industry employed 300,000 Australian citizens in the 2022 financial year with a further 25,000 overseas workers employed for season work (estimated by ABS).
  • In 2021-22 Australian Agriculture exports reached an estimated record of 76 billion dollars.

National Ag Day is an opportunity for NACC NRM to celebrate all the fantastic people in agriculture in the NAR, from the residents of our region to our project partners, groups, and government representatives. It is the combined efforts of all of us that keep Agriculture economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable so that we can all enjoy continued growth and prosperity for the years to come.
