Port Denison based companies Southerly Designs and Dongara Marine shifted their focus from the ocean to the river banks when they turned-out to help the Irwin Tidy Towns Sustainable Committee plant 400 seedlings along the Irwin River recently.
The planting forms part of a series of revegetation activities under the Irwin River Estuary Management Plan, which aims to restore biodiversity, habitat and stability to an area left bare as a result of the removal of the noxious weed, African Boxthorn.
Seedlings for the ‘business planting’ event were funded via NACC’s Elevate Your Impact project – which engages and supports local businesses and schools in on-ground environmental activities in the local community in order to enhance Natural Resource Management (NRM) outcomes.
Southerly Designs Managing Director Andrew Taylor said he enjoyed getting out of the office and contributing to the local community.
Volunteers frequently report that the Elevate Your Impact project provides the opportunity to participate in something unique and to learn new skills. Business volunteering activities such as these have also been shown to help build teamwork and enhance workplace culture.
Businesses in the NACC NRM region who would like to get involved in environmental activities similar to this are encouraged to contact Sarah at NACC via email [email protected], or mobile 0408 891 502.
