Local land managers and community groups will once again be able to apply for up to $10,000 in funding for projects that help to protect and repair our region’s unique coastal environment.

The Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC) has opened Round 8 of their highly popular Coastal Community Grants program – which funds local projects aimed at tackling local coastal management and restoration issues.

A number of local marine identification slates, coastal erosion hazard mapping, and a number of revegetation projects are just some of the projects that the grant program has funded in previous rounds.

NACC Coastal and Marine Project Officer Hamish Longbottom said “The grants provide much needed support to projects in the NACC NRM region, and fund some truly innovative and creative projects working to improve local management of natural resources along our coast.

“NACC is looking forward to reviewing an exciting batch of new project proposals,” he said.

“Projects like the marine identification slates – that we funded in Round 7 – are a great example of the types of innovative ideas being funded by these grants.”

Hamish said the reusable, waterproof slates will be used by recreational snorkelers to record fish species in places like the Jurien Bay Interpretative Snorkel and Dive Trail. Results will then be collated and used to monitor fish population changes over time.

Community groups, local governments and other eligible groups – such as educational institutions and not-for-profit organisations involved in the management of coastal and marine resources – are encouraged to apply. The coastal grants program is part of the Coastal and Marine Program that NACC is delivering for the Australian Government as part of the National Landcare Programme.
