Great cocky count update

4The Great Cocky Count was a great success again this year. Around 700 volunteers registered to survey 426 roost sites. The birds turned up for many (but not all, alas) of the counters. The count recorded records on most fronts:

  • 16,392 White Tailed Black-Cockatoos at 100 occupied roosts
  • 1,907 Forest Red Tailed Black-Cockatoos at 66 occupied roosts
  • These numbers mean that we counted approximately 27% of all Black-Cockatoos in the South West of Western Australia on a single night!
  • 4,897 Carnaby’s at a single (mega) roost site!

BirdLife Australia thanks all the hard working volunteers for their Great Cocky Count efforts this year.
