Empowering the Community with GIS

From the creators of GRID, comes a great new and free online QGIS training course specifically aimed at people in the NRM sector.

Who doesn’t like free stuff?Quantum GIS (QGIS) is an open source, desktop Geographical Information System (GIS) that allows you to create your own maps. To get you using this great free resource, Gaia Resources has created a series of YouTube videos to teach you how.

The prerequisite videos will give you a brief introduction to what GIS is, talk you through downloading and installing the software and get you using some sample data. The videos start with the basics, with all the exercises having a mixture of environmental flavoured visuals and hands-on exercises so you can follow along. At that introductory level, everything is covered from data management, symbolising, querying, analysis toolsets and map making.

NACC would like to express its gratitude towards Gaia Resources for creating this great resource to help the NRM community create great maps. Make sure you check them out on YouTube.

QGIS works hand in hand with GRID (Geographic & Reporting Information Database), which is summarised as an easy-to-use, online GIS for Natural Resource Management (NRM) groups. Groups can use GRID to easily capture and store their data online without any software and then export to QGIS to undertake any more complicated data analysis or map creation.

If you are an NRM group within the Northern Agricultural Region and would like to use GRID to capture and store your data, please get in contact with NACC’s GIS and Sustainability Coordinator Emma Jackson on (08) 9938 0104 or [email protected] or visit the NACC website to find out more.

This project is supported by funding from the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program, supported by Royalties for Regions.
