The Region’s peak environmental body, the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC) is to lose its CEO following the decision by Alan Bradley to leave the organisation after five years at the helm.
The NACC Board, chaired by Perenjori farmer Chris King, has appointed an interim CEO, Shelley Spriggs, to manage the organisation while a national wide search is conducted to replace Mr Bradley.
Mr Bradley, presided over an organisation that has changed the shape of environmental management in the region through new ways of working with the community to protect and repair local natural resources.
Mr Bradley said he had been very proud to have been part of the team that built an organisation that had, in five short years, developed relationships with almost half of the land managers in the Northern Agricultural Region.
“NACC’s footprint in the region has been extensive,” he said. “Around 70 per cent of the NAR region is privately owned and it’s crucial that the natural resources on private land, as well as reserve areas, are protected for the future ,” he said. “NACC was able to work closely with these land managers to help them understand the importance of biodiversity and soil health and how to include these elements in their farm planning.
“We have developed a region-wide network of land managers who have a much greater awareness of the need to conserve and protect for future sustainability.” Mr Bradley said.
NACC Chair, Chris King said he was appreciative of the tremendous work that Mr Bradley had undertaken over the past five years.
“His contribution in raising awareness about the importance of managing our precious natural resource has been enormous”, said Mr King. “We hope to maintain the momentum created by Mr Bradley, and with the limited resources we have obtain the best balance possible for NRM in the region.
In 2010 NACC is facing new challenges with new funding arrangements for natural resource management under the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country program.
Mr King said that a review of NACC operations in early 2010 may see some adjustments to NACC operations in the second half of the year.
