The peak body for the environment and natural resource management in the Northern Agricultural Region, the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC), has run the Rivercare and Wetlands Program for the past two years.
According to Margi Weir, Water Program Leader, the program has been highly successful.
“This has been an outstanding example of a successful incentives program,” said Ms Weir.
“More than one million dollars has been allocated to landholders to undertake more than 90 projects.
“These projects have protected and rehabilitated more than 4,300 hectares of riparian areas.
The program has enabled landholders to undertake the following works:
· Nearly 260 kilometres of fencing,
· Over 100 hectares of revegetation and a similar area of enhancement plantings,
· 125 hectares of weed control,
· 13 hectares of mechanical weed control,
· 15 hectares of rabbit control,
· Relocation of 4 stock watering points and installation of 7 stock crossings.
“Due to changes in our funding we will no longer be able to offer on ground works beyond November this year.
“This really is the last chance to protect a river, stream, creek or wetland on your property.
“We can fund works which include fencing to keep livestock out, relocating watering points, site stabilisation, weed and rabbit control around the site.
