More than six cubic metres of rubbish – enough to fill a small room – was picked up from
beaches and parks in Ledge Point in a cleanup day coordinated by the Ledge Point
Coastcare Group for Clean Up Australia Day recently.
The handful of dedicated community members who gathered to help out, picked up a variety
of rubbish, including plastics, fishing equipment and fast food containers.
According to the group’s coordinator, Jan Richards, this is the third beach cleanup day since
the group began. Jan said it was wonderful to have such a great bunch of volunteers come
along to help clean up the town’s beaches.
“Debris on our beaches is not only unsightly, it also has a negative impact on the marine and
coastal wildlife we all enjoy and depend upon”, she said.
Ms Richards thanks the volunteers who gave up their time, and local business “Beachsands
- Ledge Point” who donated ice creams and drinks to the workers on the day.
The Ledge Point Coastcare Group has more events planned including a Coastal
Rehabilitation Workshop on Wednesday April 21
Bright. Topics covered will include site assessment, planting, weed control, erosion control
and monitoring as well as coastal site visits.
The Coastal Rehabilitation Workshop is free and open to all community members. It has
been made possible by support from Coastwest, the Northern Agricultural Catchments
Council (NACC) and the Ledge Point Community Association.
